MCD to dig recharge pits to solve waterlogging

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will dig recharge pits in 56 locations in the city where waterlogging occurs frequently due to poor drainage systems. This is the first of its kind initiative by a municipal body in the State which will prevent waterlogging and will ensure water retention and conservation besides recharge of the water table, said the municipal commissioner, Manuj Goyal.

The short spell of rain in the past few days exposed failure on the part of the authorities concerned to resolve the issue of waterlogging in the city. The corporation spends crores of rupees every year on de-silting drains but local residents continue to face problems due to waterlogging in different parts of the city. To tackle this issue, the corporation identified 56 locations that are prone to waterlogging even after a light spell of rain. The municipal officials said that the corporation was earlier making soak pits to control the water logging issue but it could not be resolved completely. Goyal said that the corporation has now started the work of creating a recharge pit in an attempt to curb waterlogging and simultaneously recharge groundwater. He said that recharge pits will be created near these sites where water will percolate into the ground through the recharge pits before it can accumulate there. He said that the idea is to provide room for water to recede so that it does not accumulate on the road and will protect vulnerable areas from waterlogging. These pits will allow the rainwater to replenish groundwater by recharging the underground aquifers, added the commissioner. Talking about the current progress of the work, he said that the work of creating a recharge pit has been recently completed in lane number 2 of the Shastri Nagar area which is working quite well. Besides this, work is already at the final stage in 10 locations and the work of creating pits in the remaining locations will be commenced soon, added Goyal.
