Himalayan Circular Economy Forum organised at UCOST

Padma Bhushan recipient and founder of Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organisation (HESCO) Anil Prakash Joshi stressed on the concept of ecology inclusive economy. He emphasised on the fact the circular economy would only be successful if it is region and resource- specific, along with the right kind of dividends at every step of economic growth and development. He said this while speaking at the Himalayan Circular Economy Forum organised as part of Uttarakhand@25 initiatives at the Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST) in collaboration with International Council for Circular Economy (ICCE) on Saturday.

The aim of the event was to inculcate green economy thinking among members of the Himalayan community who are most likely to get affected by the current unecological practices of growth and development. The urgency to shift the development pattern from linear to a circular one, is now being felt when the population is increasing at an unprecedented rate and lifestyle is becoming unsustainable.

Shalini Goyal Bhalla from ICCE explained why circular economy is important particularly for the Himalayan States. She further added that Himalayan Circular Economy Forum seeks to align the socio-economic benefits with the environmental cost and benefits for a sustainable future.

The ACEO of Centre for Public Policy and Good Governance, Uttarakhand, Manoj Pant spoke about the size and growth rate of Uttarakhand’s economy. He further explained the issues of linear economy and through SDGs highlighted the circular economy model. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also conveyed his ideas via a video message on the occasion.

Earlier, the UCOST director general Durgesh Pant welcomed the gathering and highlighted the “Pragati to Prakriti” concept of the HESCO founder.

Three panel discussion sessions were organised on plastics, building foundation and GEP panel during the event.
