Cancer surgery conducted on octogenarian patient at MI hospital

The Shri Mahant Indiresh hospital has claimed to have conducted a successful surgery on an 87 year old woman suffering from cancer.

Commenting on the surgery he conducted with his team, the hospital’s senior cancer specialist Dr Pankaj Garg said that age alone should not be a contraindication for cancer treatment. “As people age, they tend to develop other health issues which may complicate cancer treatment. However, with careful evaluation and personalised treatment plans, older patients can tolerate cancer treatments and achieve good outcomes,” he said.

The hospital sources claimed that the elderly lady had undergone successful removal of both her breasts.

Dr Garg said that the older patients should not be denied cancer treatment solely based on their age. “Rather, a comprehensive evaluation of the patient’s health status, including any co-morbidity, should be done before deciding on the most appropriate treatment,” he said, adding that this particular case should serve as a motivation for more research into geriatric oncology and improving access to cancer care for older adults.
