In latest Dehradun news, with the 2024 general election drawing near, both the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress are all set to launch outreach programmes in Uttarakhand. While the BJP will embark on the one-week ‘Meri Mati Mera Desh’ programme commencing on August 9 and concluding on August 15 to pay tribute to those martyred during the freedom movement and also to felicitate the ex-army personnel the Congress, on the other hand, are gearing up to launch its padyatra to be attended by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi among others.  According to the political observers, the objective behind the BJP’s ‘Meri Mati Mera Desh’ programme is to further consolidate the electoral support of the army personnel behind it. It is learnt from the State BJP sources that the party is trying to rope in as many school students and members of voluntary organisations and self-help groups as possible in the programme. Besides, the party activists are collecting soil from the houses of the martyrs to prepare an ‘Amrit Vatika’ and in the Amtit Vatika, 75 saplings of different species would be planted.

The opposition Congress, on its part, is preparing to take out its two-month-long padyatra likely to be led by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi for 10 days. According to the State Congress leaders, they would try to mobilise the youth of State sulking over the Agnipath scheme.  They said that during this outreach programme, they would visit each house and would highlight how the future of the youth, aspiring to join the army, is being jeopardised by this scheme.
