Welham Girls’ School hosted the ‘Arangetram’ ceremony for two of its Class XII students- Samriddhi and Meenal Goel-both disciples of C K Rajalakshmi and Satyapriya Iyer. The organisers of the event said that for a Bharatnatyam dancer, an ‘Arangetram’ (ascending the stage) is a graduation ceremony that marks the first step towards being a professional. Samriddhi and Meenal began their marathon performance with the traditional invocation to the Devi revered as the Universal Mother. This was followed by Alarippu, the first technical introductory piece in the repertoire. The school officebearers saidthatAacharya Jayalakshmi Eshwar, one of the most renowned exponents of Bharatnatyam, was present as the chief guest on the occasion and she was all praise for the young dancers.
The live orchestra ensemble included vocalist Vinod Kumar Kannur, mridangam exponent Payyanur Rajan, flutist Priyesh Kanhangad and veena exponent Karaikudi Shyamala Bhaskar.
