The Lok Sabha passed the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Bill, 2022 on Monday which enables investigating officers to collect the biometric details of prisoners. The Uttarakhand director general of police (DGP), Ashok Kumar has strongly supported the bill, stating that its enactment will facilitate various benefits for the victims of crime and criminal justice system while also proving tough on the criminals.

The DGP said that the steps proposed in this bill are the need of the hour. Such steps will ensure fool proof and faster detection while also enabling fair and scientific investigation of crimes. Another important effect of these provisions is that the victims of crimes will benefit from these developments which will make it tougher for the criminals to evade the law. “The provisions in this bill are measures which are already being used effectively in various developed nations in law enforcement. As far as apprehensions regarding misuse of the provisions- like biometrics- are concerned, it should be noted that the scope for misuse is already there through various other platforms where they are already in use,”said the DGP.
