Haridwar MP and former chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ said that the books play an immense role in the lives of people. “Whatever we are today, wherever we are, it is all because of books. We speak as we think and we do as we speak, so think well, do well and be well,” he said. Nishank was speaking as the chief guest at a programme organised on the occasion of World Book Day by Sanjay Orthopaedic, Spine and Maternity Centre here on Sunday. Founder president of Auroville Ashram, Swami Brahmadev said that no matter how many books one reads, the biggest task is to read one’s life. “Understand yourself, know yourself and try to find yourself. Life develops only through books, so keep reading,” he said.

Padma Shri recipient orthopaedic surgeon Dr BKS Sanjay said, “Books are our best friends, whenever you want their company, they are with you and fulfill their duties and responsibilities without any binding of time and circumstances. Authors die after writing but their books remain immortal like our scriptures Ramayana, Mahabharata, Quran, Bible, Guru Granth Sahib, Agama and Pitika etc. When we read a book, it seems that we are having a direct interview with the author and this feeling makes authors immortal along with the writings. Parents and guardians should inculcate the habit of reading in their children from childhood,” he said.

Academician Sudha Rani Pandey said that books influence our mental, ideological, intellectual and theoretical thoughts. Professor Sushil Upadhyay said that there are various books in many educational institutions and libraries but the books have only reached the shelves.  SN Singh said that instead of unnecessary expenses, one should buy books which make and enrich lives. Rajneesh Trivedi said that books are akin to light in the darkness. They brighten our lives by their knowledge and shape our lives, he said.

Uttarakhand State Council of Science and Technology (UCOST) director general Durgesh Pant, Padma Shri recipient environmentalist Kalyan Singh Rawat, BJP leader Siddharth Umesh Aggarwal, Dr Sujata Sanjay and Dr Gaurav Sanjay were also among those present on the occasion.
