Villagers threaten poll boycott, citing incomplete water project

Friday 05 April 2024 | PNS | UTTARKASHI

In latest news from Uttarakhand, following the obstruction in the final phase of ‘Har Ghar Nal Har Ghar Jal Yojana’ in gram panchayat Dang, the villagers threatened poll boycott unless their demand for immediate security for those engaged in the project, including the labourers, is provided in view of the threat posed by some villagers of a neighbouring village who had illegally damaged the drinking water pipes and pipelines used in the government work. Notably, the district magistrate Uttarkashi had already directed the sub-divisional magistrate Bhatwari and the executive engineer, Jal Sansthan, Uttarkashi to provide adequate security to those engaged in the water pipe laying project. However, in spite of this, the work has remained suspended due to non-availability of police security. The work of the scheme is in its final stage and now only a few hundred meters are left for laying the pipe.

The villagers said that they would have no option but to stay away from polling on April 19 en masse unless the work is completed by that day. Echoing the villagers’ sentiment, the gram pradhan Roshan Lal said that the appeals of the people for security to complete the final phase of the work have fallen on deaf ears and this has angered the villagers.
