The 9th annual Shaheed memorial cricket tournament hosted by UPES to pay tribute to the martyrs of armed forces and financially support their families, concluded on Tuesday with UPES winning the tournament for the third time in a row. The tournament was organised to remember and support the family of martyr Naik Harendra Singh from Pipalsari village in Pauri district who made the ultimate sacrifice in October 2021 during counter insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir. The martyr’s family was presented a cheque for Rs 2.51 lakh raised through the tournament. Besides raising money through the tournament, UPES will be supporting both the sons of martyr Naik Harendra Singh with free education and a job to one member of the family at UPES.
Paying tribute to Singh, UPES chancellor Sunil Rai said “It is our privilege to be supporting the family of such courageous soldiers and an honor for us to be able to support the dependents. Supporting the family of late Naik Harendra Singh is our way of extending gratitude towards his heroism and gallantry.” A total of 10 teams participated in the tournament.
