MCD awaits Govt approval for smart vending zones

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is waiting for the State government’s approval for the construction of new smart vending zones and wedding venues in the city to increase the revenue generation of the corporation. The plan of constructing 19 smart vending zones and a few wedding halls was announced earlier in January this year and then the corporation conducted a survey to mark the locations. However, work on the plan could not proceed due to State-wide lockdown imposed in March to check the spread of Covid-19. The municipal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey recently informed that the corporation has finally sent a proposal to the State Government regarding the same and added that the civic body will carry out further proceedings as soon as the government will approve the proposal. It is pertinent to mention here that there are about 2,700 vegetable and fruit vendors registered with MCD.

This number is purportedly way less than the actual numbers of vendors. As stated by Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ about the plan, the construction of vending zones will provide better business to vendors, cause less traffic jams and accidents on roadsides and will also generate revenue for the corporation. He also stated in the last executive meeting of the MCD that he aims to provide employment opportunities to about ten thousand locals of the city through various plans of the corporation like construction of new smart vending zones and wedding venues.

The locations marked by the corporation for vending zones construction lie near Karnpur, Nehru Colony, Patel Nagar, Indira Colony and MDDA Colony Dalanwala among several others in the city.
