The Uttarakhand government has increased the compensation given in case of deaths due to road accidents from existing Rs one lakh to Rs two lakh.

The notification for amendment in the Uttarakhand Road Transport Accident Relief Fund was issued by the Transport secretary Arvind Singh Hyanki on Saturday. In the meeting of the Uttarakhand cabinet held earlier on Wednesday the decision to increase the amount of compensation to the family members of those losing their lives in accidents  was taken.

The decision of the Uttarakhand government is significant because many lives are lost every year due to accidents in the State. Earlier this month, 33 persons were killed in a bus mishap in Pauri district. Accidents involving smaller vehicles causing fatalities and injuries are not uncommon in both the mountainous and plain regions of the State.
