An ascetic of the Juna Akhada sustained serious injuries after being assaulted by two unknown persons late on Monday night in Haridwar. The culprits attacked the Kothari Mahakal Giri of the Juna Akhada with a baseball bat and ran away from the spot after other ascetics arrived on hearing the noise. The injured ascetic was taken to the district hospital from where he was referred to a hospital in Dehradun. Meanwhile, the police have started investigating the case and are trying to identify the culprits based on CCTV camera footage.
At about 11 PM on Monday night, Mahakal Giri of the Juna Akhada had gone to the Bhairav temple for some work. He was attacked by two unidentified youth at this time. Other ascetics and locals reached the site on hearing his cries. The attackers fled from the spot after the others started arriving. The ascetics transported the injured Sadhu to the district hospital from where he was soon referred to a higher centre. On Tuesday, superintendent of police (city) Swatantra Kumar Singh reached Juna Akhada and inquired about the entire incident. The SP City said that the footage of CCTV cameras from around the spot is being scrutinised, in which two persons are seen assaulting the ascetic. The search for the two culprits has been started on the basis of the CCTV camera footage. The motive behind the assault will be known only after the attackers are caught. The police are investigating the matter, he added.
Meanwhile, national secretary of Panch Dashnam Juna Akhada Mahesh Puri told this correspondent that the attack on a Sadhu is a shameful incident and will not be tolerated. “Members of the religious fraternity are angry and concerned following the attack. We have talked to senior police officers and want justice as soon as possible,” he said.
