Following the direction of Uttarkashi district magistrate Meharban Singh Bisht, a Solid Waste Management (SWM) plant has been installed recently at Jankichatti. According to sources, this new facility is effectively aiding in the safe disposal of solid waste. Apart from this, the plant is being by the DM closely to ensure its efficiency. The officials informed that the plant which incorporates modern plasma technology, has been operational since the commencement of the Char Dham Yatra and has the capability to handle up to one tonne of solid waste per day. Given the significant amount of plastic and other solid waste generated during the Yatra to Yamunotri Dham and neighboring areas including Jankichatti, the establishment of this waste management plant was essential.

The officials further added that the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board facilitated this development as part of the Prasad scheme, investing a total of Rs 2.36 crore in the initiative.

Informing about the plant further the officials added that the plant is equipped with oxygenation-plasma technology for disposal of solid waste, making it one of the few in the country with this feature.  The plant can convert one tonne of garbage into 15 to 20 kilogrammes of ash. With arrangements in place for the safe treatment of gases emitted during garbage disposal, the plant ensures minimal, white smoke devoid of harmful gases from its chimney. Operational for eight hours daily, the plant has the capacity to dispose of approximately one tonne of garbage.

Notably, in preparation for Char Dham Yatra, Bisht has earlier directed officials to ensure the efficient utilisation of this newly constructed SWM plant. Officials emphasised that the implementation of this modern technological plant will greatly contribute to addressing the waste management issue in the region. This initiative signifies a significant step towards environmental preservation and cleanliness in Uttarakhand, they added.
