The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) will soon conduct a meeting with the Education department and other departments concerned regarding the operation of Madarsas in the State. The SCPCR chairperson Geeta Khanna informed that upon receiving multiple complaints the commission has been conducting periodic monitoring and surprise on-site inspections of Madarsas. These inspections had revealed that the books being used in Madarsas are government-published but they do not meet the standards. The basic facilities and infrastructure of these Madarsas are also below standard. The commission has also discovered that many Madarsas are operating as private schools, she added.

She said that the commission has held discussions with the chairman of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights. On February 8, a letter was sent to the Madarsa Board seeking a comprehensive list of all Madarsas. Further, the commission has initiated necessary actions at its level based on confidential investigations into the operation of Madarsas.  These investigations have brought to light that 749 Hindu children too are currently enrolled in Madarsas, she said. Khanna said that it is the commission’s priority to closely monitor the activities of Madarsas and any other educational institutions where children are enrolled.
