DM expresses displeasure over low surgery numbers in government hospitals

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

The Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal reviewed the performance of specialist doctors in various government hospitals and expressed strong dissatisfaction over the low number of surgeries and institutional patients at Dehradun district hospital, Rishikesh sub-district hospital, Vikasnagar sub-district hospital and Premnagar hospital.

During the review meeting on Thursday, the DM questioned the poor performance despite the availability of doctors, equipment and funds. He stated that decisions about conducting surgeries should not be based on personal discretion when all necessary facilities are available. “We are all nurtured by the public exchequer. It is our responsibility to fulfill our duties with full dedication,” he said.

The DM also noted discrepancies between hospital records and actual services offered. He ordered the doubling of surgical operations in all these hospitals by May 15. Bansal said that according to the current data, Premnagar hospital reported 723 surgeries, of which 205 were major, while Vikasnagar Hospital conducted 426 surgeries, including 219 major procedures. Terming these numbers insufficient, the DM instructed immediate action to boost performance. He warned that citing fewer patients or lower surgery numbers is no excuse for evading responsibility.

The DM has sought detailed explanations from hospitals regarding patient admissions, deliveries, caesareans, surgeries and referrals, along with reasons behind each figure. He said that if the officials concerned failed to perform their duties efficiently, strict action will be taken against them under relevant provisions.
