Spell of rain & winds expose gaps in Nainital again

Tuesday, 24 May 2022 | PNS | Nainital

The lack of proper garbage disposal and other gaps in a popular tourist destination were exposed yet again after rain accompanied by gusts of wind hit Nainital on Monday. While the combination of rain and wind drenched those outdoors despite their umbrellas, it also resulted in covering the famous Naini lake with garbage from various parts of the city.

The rain during the morning caused the drains to overflow. The lower Mall Road experienced water logging which caused considerable inconvenience to the public in commuting. The meteorological centre had forecast rain on Monday but the people were not ready for the gusts of wind which accompanied the rain. The strong winds which lasted for about 20 minutes made the umbrellas being used by people useless for protection from the rain. The tourists who had come out to saunter on the Mall Road as usual in the morning had a tough time during the rain. The intensity of the rain caused the drains to overflow and as a result of this, within a brief time, considerable quantities of garbage ended up floating on the Naini lake. The intensity of the rain lessened at about 11 AM. However, many tourists made their way back to their homes from Nainital considering the change in the weather. The spell of rain brought down the temperatures considerably with the maximum temperature being recorded at 20 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature was 12 degrees Celsius.
