MCD to keep tax section open this weekend

Saturday, 30 March 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will keep its tax section open this weekend to ensure maximum property tax collection. Against its target to collect property tax of Rs 60 crore, the MCD has collected about Rs 52 crore so far. The corporation was initially confident about collecting Rs 60 crore by March 31 but now the officials are also sceptical about achieving this target. The four-day strike of MCD staff earlier this month also affected the tax collection.  In order to ensure maximum tax collection, the tax section was also opened to the public last Sunday. As per the tax section officials, over 1.25 lakh property taxpayers are registered with MCD, including about 20,000 non-residential property taxpayers.

The corporation is doing extremely well in terms of property tax collection this time compared to past financial years. The MCD collected Rs 52 crore last year and the total revenue collection this year will definitely be more than this amount. However it seems difficult that MCD will receive property tax of about Rs eight crore on the weekend, the officials said. The municipal tax superintendent Poonam Rawat said that this year, the corporation received about 20 per cent of total property tax online which was only 10 per cent last year. Most of the tax defaulters of high pending taxes also paid property tax this year.

The MCD also collected Rs 15 crore in the first month of this financial year, which had never happened before. The tax section was given the target to collect Rs 60 crore to motivate the officials to ensure more revenue collection than last year. The tax collection will certainly be more than the last time and expected to be quite close to Rs 60 crore, she added.
