The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) will soon approach all the district magistrates of Uttarakhand to know how the respective administrations have been handling various issues related to children including child trafficking and drug addiction. The chairperson of the commission, Usha Negi said that several crimes are being committed against children and by children under certain influences in almost every district and to tackle such issues, every administration needs to focus and implement a concrete plan for the welfare of the children. “The commission will approach the district magistrates and set up meetings in the next few days. We will inspect the districts and get to know what the administrations are doing about increasing child trafficking cases which is allegedly pushing several minors into prostitution. We will also ascertain whether they have established any anti-drug cells or proper rehabilitation center for the minor drug addicts in their districts,” stated Negi. According to her, the commission would like to know how many cases have been registered under POCSO in each district and what are the arrangements for the counselling of affected children. Besides, the commission will also check how the Child Welfare Committees (CWCs) are working to provide protection to such children and taking care of them with the available funds in each district and from where the committees are receiving their funds, added Negi.

The chairperson further said that she would prefer to have face to face meetings with district magistrates of the State so that she can examine the conditions on her own and can have a better discussion on the issues. She also informed,

“We were planning to approach the district administration before but recently after two employees in the commission tested positive for Covid-19, the office of SCPCR was closed but it will be resumed on Thursday.”
