One killed after Kanwad race turns violent in Manglaur

One Kanwadiya died after the competition between two groups of Kanwadiyas to reach their destination earlier resulted in a violent altercation between the two groups. The incident occurred early on Tuesday at about 6 AM in the Manglaur area of Haridwar district. Two groups of Kanwadiyas from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana were attempting to outpace each other while travelling to their respective destinations.

According to the police, Dak Kanwad pilgrims from Muzaffarnagar in UP and Haryana were moving towards their destinations with Ganga water from Haridwar.  Both the groups were competing to get ahead of each other. On the Delhi-Haridwar bypass road near Nagla Imarti, the Dak Kanwads from Uttar Pradesh overtook the group from Haryana. The group from Haryana allegedly raised ruckus over this. At first verbal abuses were exchanged but the situation soon escalated and members of the two groups started fighting each other with lathis and hockey sticks. A number of the men were injured in the violent altercation.

The injured were taken to the Roorkee civil hospital where Muzaffarnagar resident Kartik was declared brought dead by the doctors. Manglaur police CO Bahadur Singh Chauhan informed that a case has been lodged and the probe is underway. The police are searching for the accused.
