Election necessitated due to the death of the BJP MLA Surendra Singh Jeena
The by- election for the Salt assembly constituency in Almora district would be held on April 17. The Election Commission of India issued the notification for by elections in two parliamentary and 14 assembly constituencies on Tuesday. As per the commission the last date for the submission of nomination for the by election is March 30 while the candidates can withdraw their names on or before April 3. The counting of the votes would be on May 2 and the results are expected on the day.
The by- election is necessitated due to the death of the BJP MLA Surendra Singh Jeena last year. The by election assumes significance since it would be the test of the popularity of the BJP government just ahead of the general elections slated early next year. The elections would also be an acid test for the new chief minister Tirath Singh Rawat and Congress stalwart and former CM Harish Rawat.
