The Uttarakhand Congress has decided to oppose the visit of Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi if he does not seek apology for the Lakhimpur Kheri violence and death of farmers. Modi will visit Rishikesh on Thursday. Talking to the media persons at the Congress headquarters here the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Ganesh Godiyal said that if PM visits Kedarnath shrine then we expect him to repent for non fulfilment of the promises he made to the people of Uttarakhand.

Coming down heavily on the union and Uttar Pradesh (UP) governments for Lakhimpur Kheri violence, Godiyal said the incident reflects the dictatorial attitude of BJP. He said the incident is a blot on democracy and the manner in which the vehicle was rammed on the farmers has shocked the whole country. Godiyal said that when the Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi tried to visit Lakhimpur Kheri she was detained by the government in an undemocratic manner. He said that Gandhi was stopped from visiting Lakhimpur Kheri for the third successive day on Tuesday which proves that the BJP government is afraid of her. Godiyal said that by stopping Priyanka Gandhi the UP government has proved that it is anti democratic.

Castigating the BJP government of Uttarakhand for enforcing National Security Act (NSA) in the state, the PCC president said that the government has done this to stifle the voice of farmers, employee organisations, labour unions, women protesters and unemployed. Godiyal said that the BJP government has proved to be a failure on all fronts. He said that chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami after assuming office had claimed that he will talk less and work more but he is only talking and the work is nowhere to be seen. In a scathing attack on the CM Dhami, the PCC president claimed that he and his ministers have given a free hand to the mining mafia and the entire government is sitting in the lap of the mafia. He said that the mining mafia are engaging in rampant exploitation of mineral wealth of the state and the bases of the bridges constructed during the Congress regime are being excavated which are a threat to life and property.

Godiyal thanked the Uttarakhand High Court (HC) for withdrawing restrictions on the Char Dham Yatra.

Earlier on the day the PCC president and other leaders of Uttarakhand Congress sat on a Maun Vrat at the Congress headquarters in protest against the detention and maltreatment of Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi.
