Roadside stalls during Deepawali affect traffic in markets

Sunday, 12 November 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The effect of roadside stalls put up to sell various items for Deepawali on the traffic is causing considerable inconvenience to the public. Some persons in the market claimed that retailers are setting up stalls outside their shops instead of displaying their goods inside the stores. This is resulting in more traffic congestion. The police or the government should impose some restrictions on setting up stalls on the roads, especially in the main market area, to reduce traffic congestion, the local citizens said.

Local resident Meghna Kaur said shopping in the market becomes difficult during Deepawali. Shopkeepers display extra decorative items outside their shops and block half of the roads, which hinders people while shopping. Vendors putting up stalls in the main market are also one of the main reasons causing traffic congestion in the market, she added.

Saree shop owner Sangam Bisht said that both shopkeepers and customers face a lot of traffic, especially during Deepawali. The street vendors, mostly poor people, set up small stalls on the streets, causing traffic congestion and creating a barrier for shoppers. She added that the municipal corporation or the police should take strict action to address this issue.

Another local resident Pooja Arora said, “Traffic is a common issue that people face during the festive season, especially during Deepawali. However, I believe that street vendors and shopkeepers who set up stalls outside their shops during this festive period are the main reason for causing traffic congestion in the market. Therefore, the police or the authorities in charge should prohibit the setting up of stalls on the market roads, especially for the shopkeepers.”
