Road cutting starts, Dumak residents not convinced

After residents of the remote Dumak village in Joshimath block of Chamoli district threatened to boycott the Lok Sabha election unless the village is connected by a road, the authorities have started working on building the road. However, the villagers are not convinced and allege that the work has been started to dupe the villagers, adding that the executing agency has not even submitted the detailed project report of the road to the administration.

The residents of Dumak have stressed that they will continue their opposition till the construction of the road starts properly. Considering the opposition, the authorities got heavy machinery on site and the executing agency PMGSY started road cutting work. However, the villagers are not satisfied and state that the executing agency has not yet submitted the DPR to the administration. About 500 people live in this village.

The PMGSY prepared the alignment of the 31-kilometre Saiji-Lagga-Maikot-Dumak road in 2010. However after a geological survey was conducted due to landslides on some sites, it was recommended that the alignment should be changed.

The head of the local committee headed the protest, Rajendra Singh Bhandari said that the villagers will continue their opposition till the department provides written assurance about the road construction. The sub divisional magistrate Chandrashekhar Vashishth said that PMGSY has started road cutting at the site.
