Tourists from across India and abroad visit Nainital and the tourist number tend to rise as the temperatures rise in the plains. The Naini lake is the major attraction in town and most of the tourists visit the lake. However a number of tourists enter its waters along the shores to frolick which increases the risk of drowning but the municipality is maintaining an apathetic stance towards this dangerous trend.
With the summer underway, the number of tourists arriving in Nainital has increased considerably with the tourist season at its peak. A number of tourists pose for photographs on the shores of the Naini lake and many of these visitors also enter its waters to frolick. When some locals or other concerned citizens tell such tourists to avoid entering the lake, the advice is usually ignored or rejected outright. This raises the risk of tourists slipping and drowning in the lake. The Nainital municipality has neither taken any action to prevent such risky behaviour by tourists not has it issued any guidelines to ensure that tourists behave in a responsible manner. In this situation, tourists along with children can be seen entering the lake without any safety measures or precautions. Sub divisional magistrate Navzish Khalik said that the municipality has been directed to monitor the shores of the lake to prevent any untoward incident.
