The Uttarakhand High Court has directed the Nainital district magistrate and Nainital municipality executive officer to state as to under which rules are food vans being given licenses to operate in Nainital-Bhawali, Nainital-Halwani and Nainital-Kaladhungi areas. The court has directed the officials to examine the licenses and submit a report in two weeks. The division bench of justices Sharad Kumar Sharma and Ravind Maithani also directed that the food vans should remain mobile and not remain stationary. Further, the municipality should clear the garbage generated by such vans.

The High Court had taken cognisance of the operation of food vans in the Nainital area on February 16 and taking up the matter in the form of a PIL, had directed the district magistrate and municipality executive officer to clarify the situation.  On Thursday, the district magistrate and other officials appeared in the court.  The court also took cognisance of litter from food vans and serving of liquor in tourist spots. It was also noted that owners of some food vans had removed the tyres of the vehicle and started building shacks and walls around it. The Forest department and Public Works Department were not taking cognisance of this activity.
