The bail applications of former chairman of Uttarakhand Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UKSSSC) Raghu Bir Singh Rawat and the commission’s ex-secretary Manohar Singh Kanyal were rejected by a court in Dehradun on Monday.

They were arrested last month for their alleged involvement in Village Panchayat Development Officer (VPDO) recruitment scam in 2016. The VPDO exam was conducted in March 2016 which was attended by over 80,000 candidates. After its result was declared, the authorities started getting complaints regarding the alleged cheating in the exam. Considering this, the government looked into the matter and found anomalies in the exam due to which, the results were cancelled in 2017.

According to the officials, the forensic lab confirmed tampering with the OMR sheets of the exam this year and it was revealed during the investigation that the exam results were also allegedly decided at the house of one of the accused, Kanyal. After gathering sufficient evidence, the STF arrested Rawat, Kanyal and former exam controller of the commission, Rajendra Pokhariyal in October. The officials informed that the STF has arrested a total of 12 accused in association with the VPDO recruitment scam case so far. However, both accused Rawat and Kanyal had applied for bail in the court but it was cancelled on Monday after STF presented sufficient evidence against them. The officials said that they will continue to present efficient advocacy in court against accused involved in the case to ensure they all are brought to justice.
