The police on Sunday arrested two gang members who duped senior citizens by changing their ATM cards under the pretext of helping them. The police recovered a total of 12 ATM cards and Rs 30,000 cash from both accused identified as Pappu Kumar (40), a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district and Shiva (28), a resident of Haridwar, said the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh. He said that the accused and their gang members used to interact with people especially senior citizens outside ATM booths under the pretext to help them in money withdrawal. After getting an ATM card and PIN, they usually help them to withdraw money at that time and then change the ATM card with the fake one. They later use the card and the PIN to withdraw more money from the victim’s account. The police got a similar complaint in Herbertpur police station on December 14 according to which the accused changed the ATM card of the victim and withdrew Rs 1.10 lakh. SSP said that the police started the investigation and started analysing the CCTV cameras installed near the incident site. After gathering evidence against the accused, the police finally nabbed them from the Vikasnagar area late on Saturday night. Singh said that the police are investigating whether other members of the gang are activated in other parts of the district to ensure appropriate action can be taken against them.
