Police destroy modified silencers of 510 bikes

Tuesday, 16 January 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The police on Monday destroyed modified silencers seized from 510 vehicles operating illegally in 2023. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that the police last year started the campaign against modified and retro silencers on various complaints by women, senior citizens and others. He said that the police conducted regular checking and removed illegal silencers from vehicles and submitted them to the traffic police. The police finally destroyed all with a road roller at Police Lines in Dehradun. The SSP said that illegal modification of silencers and pressure horns emit noise like bursting crackers that cause noise pollution and create a public nuisance, especially for children and senior citizens.

He said that modified silencers and pressure horns are widely popular among youth but they produce loud noise of at least 130 decibels which is quite higher than the noise limit for two-wheelers which is 80 decibels as per the rules. The SSP has stated that police will not tolerate such acts and will act accordingly against violators. “I appeal to all locals to only use the silencer installed by the company in their vehicles. If any person is found to be driving a vehicle with a modified silencer, police will act against them under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Motor Vehicles Act. Their silencers will be removed and destroyed in a similar manner,” Singh added.
