The Dehradun police arrested a notorious interstate robber from Delhi on charges of committing a broad daylight robbery along with his accomplice in the Vikasnagar area of the district last month. The accused is allegedly a history sheeter and 14 cases are registered against him in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Uttarakhand.

The Dehradun police were working secretly to nab the accused who was also allegedly wanted in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. The accused is notorious and rarely uses any mobile phone which also made it difficult for the police to nab him, said the senior superintendent of police Daleep Singh Kunwar. He told the media here on Thursday that a man registered a complaint in Vikasnagar Kotwali on May 23 that he was returning from a bank in Herbertpur area carrying Rs five lakh in a bag when two men on a bike snatched it and escaped. He said that the police checked and analysed footage of 350 CCTV cameras installed near the robbery site and on the nearby routes.

“The team received a tip-off on Wednesday regarding one of the robbers on the basis of which, the robber Amit Kumar was arrested near Delhi railway station. He is 34-years-old and a resident of Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. He had gone to meet his sister-in-law in Mumbai along with his wife and children with the robbed money. He was returning from Mumbai to go to his home in Moradabad via Delhi when the police nabbed him,” said Kunwar. He said that the police have also recovered Rs 1.05 lakh from him. “He has stated that he has given Rs two lakh out of Rs five lakh to his absconding accomplice Avinash. He has allegedly spent nearly Rs 60,000 on his children’s admission and textbooks. The police are working on recovering the remaining money and nabbing the absconding accused” said Kunwar.
