IIT-Roorkee wins running trophy by scoring maximum in various categories

The three-day Vasantotsav-2023 spring festival concluded at the Raj Bhawan here on Sunday.  The Indian Institute of Technology –Roorkee won the running trophy this year by scoring the maximum points in various categories. IIT Roorkee won awards in 13 categories, ONGC in 10 categories, Uttarakhand Forest department in three categories and BHEL in two categories.  The governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh presented awards to 182 position holders in 16 categories and 62 sub categories in addition to winners of art competition for children, photography competition and other events held as part of the three-day fest. He also inaugurated a digital application made by the Horticulture and Food Processing departments with the help of KK Sharma. This app is aimed at directly connecting all organic farmers to consumers for the sale of their produce.

Speaking on the occasion, the governor appreciated the enthusiasm and participation of the people in the flower exhibition this year. He said that efforts should be undertaken to make Dehradun the capital of flowers and Uttarakhand the State of flowers. Efforts will also be made to cater to the nation’s demand for flowers from Uttarakhand. Singh said that the efforts of the Horticulture department and farmers have provided a commercial form to the cultivation of flowers in the State. Agriculture, horticulture and tourism will bring about prosperity in the State, he said while adding on the need to increase production to bring about an economic revolution. “The crops of Uttarakhand are akin to a priceless heritage and it is our duty to preserve and nurture these for the coming generations. Moving one step further, there is a need to encourage natural farming along with organic farming in the State so that people can get healthful food on their plates,” said the governor.

Agriculture minister Ganesh Joshi said that this year’s Vasantotsav saw record participation. This event will take a grander form in the future, he said.

Tourism and Culture minister Satpal Maharaj also spoke on the occasion.
