Shankaracharya Rajrajeshwaranand said that there is a need to relook at the model of development being followed in the country. Instead of focusing on development of wealth, the emphasis should be on the development of the society, nation and the individual, he said.

The ascetic was speaking in a programme organised to release the book ‘Uttarakhandiyat’ authored by former chief minister and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat here on Saturday.

Rajrajeshwaranand said that development does not merely mean construction of roads and equated the prevalent model of development to the loot of the resources. He added that the direction of development should be the development of nation and society and said that unflinching commitment and not the resources are needed to achieve the desired goal.

Terming Rawat as Uttarakhand personified, he opined that Rawat’s book is actually a research document about Uttarakhand and it should be in every school and college of the State.

The leader of opposition (LoP) in the State assembly Yashpal Arya said that Uttarakhand is a unique State with natural beauty and richness of culture and the Book of Rawat would act as a guide for the new generation. The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara said that Rawat has a vision for Uttarakhand and it was his dedication and hard work which ensured that the Kedarnath shrine was reconstructed after the natural disaster. He said that Rawat was instrumental in establishing Harela as the festival of Uttarakhand in national and international forums and providing recognition to millets. Former MLA of Kedarnath Manoj Rawat said that Harish Rawat knows every part of the State.

In his address Rawat said the ruling party and opposition are two rails on which democracy moves further. Taking a dig at BJP, the former CM said that some people have become a sole proprietorship of Hindu Dharma.
