Mountains witness fresh snowfall, more forecast today

High altitude regions in the mountainous districts witnessed fresh snowfall on Saturday. The State meteorological centre has forecast that very light to light rain/ thunderstorms are likely to occur at isolated places in Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts and very light to light snowfall is likely in places situated at altitudes of 3,000 metres and above in these districts. The meteorological centre has also issued a yellow warning (Watch) regarding the possibility of ground frost likely to occur at isolated places in the mountains. Apart from this, dry weather is likely to prevail in the remaining districts of the State on Sunday.

The provisional State capital Dehradun is forecast to witness a mainly to partly cloudy sky. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be about 24 degrees Celsius and eight degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun today.

Meanwhile, various high altitude regions witnessed light snowfall on Saturday. In the Chamoli district there was snowfall in Badrinath, Hemkund-Lokpal, Valley of Flowers, Auli and Niti valley. Snowfall in the winter sports destination of Auli has enthused those involved in tourism related businesses with tourists expected to arrive here following the snowfall. The lack of snowfall during the month of January had caused anxiety among the local farmers and those in the tourism related businesses. However, the snowfall experienced during February has brought some relief to the farmers.

The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in various parts of the State on Saturday were 22.6 degrees Celsius and 6.5 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun, 24.5 degrees Celsius and 4.9 degrees Celsius in Pantnagar, 9.8 degrees Celsius and -0.7 degree Celsius in Mukteshwar and 13.1 degrees Celsius and 0.3 degree Celsius in New Tehri.
