MCH’s cow dung log project shelved indefinitely

Reluctance of some organisations to use and pay adequately yet less than price of wooden logs hampering plan

The Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) has shelved its project of making dried logs from cow dung indefinitely. The project was meant to minimise the consumption of wooden logs for cremation in the city. The corporation had in April planned to start a project of making cow dung logs to tackle waterlogging during monsoon besides potential health risks and environmental concerns like methane emission due to improper disposal of cow dung in large quantities by big dairies in the city. The plan was meant to generate a revenue of about Rs 10 lakh for MCH every month as the corporation had expected that the cow dung logs would find more buyers as they were to be sold at much cheaper rates than the actual wooden logs used for cremation. However, the MCH has failed to find any potential buyer in the past several months. It is being said that certain bodies are not welcoming this plan of cow dung logs replacing wood, especially in cremation practices at the Ghats in Haridwar.

Talking about the issue faced by the corporation in the matter, the Haridwar municipal commissioner Dayanand Saraswati said that they have talked to all responsible bodies concerned in the city to ensure cow dung logs are used in cremation services but nothing fruitful has come out of it so far. The bodies concerned have offered quite low prices for the cow dung logs and the manufacturer would barely get his manufacturing cost as per this proposed price and would suffer considerable loss in the long run. Considering this and certain other factors, the MCH has decided to shelve the project indefinitely, stated the commissioner.
