The Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) will deploy 250 additional workers to maintain the desired level of sanitation at all Ganga Ghats and areas visited by pilgrims during Char Dham Yatra. The sanitation workers will also carry out sanitation related duties at night from April 20 due to the considerable number of visitors during the daytime, said the Haridwar municipal commissioner Dayanand Saraswati.

He told The Pioneer that Char Dham Yatra is scheduled to commence from April 22 and the corporation has done all preparations to ensure pilgrims do not have to face inconvenience on their routes. He informed that MCH recently installed one water ATM and will set 19 more across the city to provide cheap and clean potable water to tourists and pilgrims during the Char Dham Yatra. A person will be able to get one litre of clean water for just Rs one through these ATMs, said Saraswati.

He said, “The corporation aims to provide affordable, clean and quality water to pilgrims on the Yatra route through water ATMs which will also reduce their dependence on plastic water bottles which becomes a major source of environmental degradation. We have also provided the facility at ATMs to pay Rs one digitally if one does not have change.” He said that MCH will also construct 20 smart public toilets ahead of Char Dham Yatra. “The renovation work of old toilets is also being done and we will also buy five new mobile toilets to use as per the requirement,” said the commissioner. He said that the tender of deploying 250 workers to manage sanitation conditions during Yatra will open soon too.

“Besides this, 100 additional dustbins will also be placed at various locations to prevent littering. We have also formed a task force to impose penalties on those using banned plastic products,” said Saraswati.
