Lack of sleep & excessive use of electronic gadgets fuelling migraines: Experts

Various factors which include prolonged use of electronic devices, anxiety and lack of sleep are causing migraine problems among people, experts said. Doctors in the city have reported an increase in cases of migraine over time. According to the experts, women are more susceptible to the ailment. Further, post Covid-19, the incidence of migraine has risen by an average of 50 per cent in the city, the experts said.

Commenting on the condition, district hospital senior physician Dr Praveen Panwar said that he has encountered many cases of migraines among people, especially females. He said that migraines are triggered by factors such as stress, anxiety and lack of sleep. Apart from this, hormonal imbalances and overuse of electronic gadgets are other common factors that can cause migraine problems among individuals. Poor lifestyle is the most prominent factor contributing to the increase in migraine cases.

After Covid-19, the cases of migraines have increased in the city by an average of 50 per cent, particularly among females. Imbalances in menstrual cycles can also cause migraines among women. He further said that when a person experiences a headache, vision problems and vomiting, one must visit a doctor immediately as these are common symptoms of migraines.

Taking breaks from using electronic gadgets, getting enough sleep and eating meals on time can help individuals prevent migraine, he said.

“There has been an increase in the cases of migraines among people, including adolescents. This increase can be attributed to factors such as climate change, coughs, colds and excessive use of laptops and phones. To prevent migraines, it is recommended that individuals limit their use of electronic gadgets and take regular breaks. Additionally, exercising and stretching can also help prevent migraines,” said Government Doon Medical College physician Dr Naresh.
