MCD to establish Pink toilets for women

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is planning to build dedicated facilities for women called Pink toilets in the main areas of the city. Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ recently announced that the corporation would build over 10 pink toilets across the city besides making several general public toilets in all the wards. Informing about this, the chief municipal health officer, Dr Kailash Joshi said that the MCD is currently looking for places at various locations to build the Pink toilets for women. “We want to establish Pink toilets in the main areas like Paltan Bazaar and Rajpur Road where a large number of women come every day. However, finding a suitable place in such areas is a challenge as the MCD needs sufficient space to build toilets which is not available in every area,” stated Dr Joshi. He further added that the city has around 45 public toilets while about 10 toilets are under construction. He also averred that the MCD would be the first municipal corporation to establish Pink toilets in Uttarakhand.

Meanwhile, the officials informed that a Pink toilet is generally equipped with various facilities like vending machines for sanitary pads, a disposal machine for the used pads and a breastfeeding area for mothers and children making it a convenient space for women. However, the officials added that the availability of the facilities also depends on the area of the space available to the corporation while adding that these toilets will be made in the public private partnership (PPP) mode after marking the locations in the city.
