Considering the sudden spike in the usage of plastic in the last nine months in the city due to covid 19, the municipal corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will send a proposal to the State Government to reinstate the plastic ban again.
In the second and the last board meeting of the corporation this year chaired by Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ today, all 27 proposed proposals were approved. One of the proposal called for reinstating the ban on the plastic, which was removed in a hurry due to covid 19 as lot of plastic had to be used in covid linked precautionary equipments.
However, no decision regarding the budget of the corporation was taken in the meeting as the mayor stated that it will be discussed only after Covid-19 impact will diminish in the city.
In the board meeting on Monday, some counsellors stated that the installation of LED street lights is taking too long in the city. Responding to this, ‘Gama’ said that the MCD has signed an agreement with EESL company for the installation and maintenance of 65,000 LED streets lights for the next seven years and for the proper installation of street lights, the company is currently conducting survey. One of the representatives of the company informed in the meeting that 95 percent survey has been completed in which they are also taking measurements like the height of poles and the broadness of roads opposite to the pole so that proper installation of 65,000 lights can be commenced from January. As per the mayor, the installation of 1000 timer switches will also start soon.
Further, the corporation will also demolish its complex on the MCD’S land in Malviya Road as the corporation has failed to get businessmen’s interested to operate in these shops there due to bad conditions of the building. Also, the board members decided that the corporation will manage all the parks in the city under the public private partnership (PPP). According to municipal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey, MCD will ensure the facilities like the proper maintenance of parks and installation of cameras but there would be no entry fee for locals. Apart from this, the mayor also informed that the corporation will soon send a revised proposal to the State Government for the establishment of a community hall in Dehradun. The mayor also approved the proposal for allotting land for the education of underprivileged children in the city who are currently studying in a school situated in Rajpur Road. “The principal of the said school, Hukum Singh Uniyal had written to the MCD stating that the said school has currently over 400 students most of which are orphans and live in the school campus too, informed the mayor. The school management stated that they fail to admit several children due to limited space and has asked MCD to provide land for the same which the corporation approved in the meeting. Meanwhile, the proposals of naming the roads from Alaknanda Enclave to Mohkampur on the name of the freedom fighter Roop Singh Gopal and a road passing through Banjarawala Bazaar on the name of freedom fighter Jeet Bahadur were also approved. The corporation took one of the most important decisions of sending a proposal to the State Government to reinstate the plastic ban in the city. As stated by municipal commissioner Pandey, the MCD worked hard to restrict the plastic use in the city but the plastic usage has increased manifold in the last nine months since the government lifted the ban during Covid-19 pandemic. “But we need to impose the ban again and the MCD will send a proposal to the State Government”, he said.
