The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Friday made history with the record breaking property tax collection of over Rs 52 crore in the financial year 2022-23. Despite heavy rain on Friday, the corporation collected Rs 3.30 crore on the last day of the financial year. The mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ also appreciated the municipal tax superintendents Dharmesh Painuly and Poonam Rawat and the whole tax section team for this record breaking collection. He said that the corporation made several changes like making the website user-friendly for tax submission and introducing digital mode of payments in MCD premises to ensure easy and safe transactions. He said that the tax section remained open even during some public holidays to ensure people can submit the tax at their convenience. Talking about tax collection, tax superintendent Dharmesh Painuly said that nearly 1.15 lakh properties are registered in the MCD at present and 65,000 people paid property tax this financial year which was below 60,000 last time. Many big non-residential establishments like Forest Research Institute (FRI) and buildings of the police department also deposited tax this year which was due for years. This is the first time in the past three years that tax submission was not severely affected due to Covid-19. He said that overall, the year was good for the corporation in terms of property tax collection and it would certainly get better in the new financial year 2023-24 after the completion of the GIS-based mapping survey of all buildings which would make the property collection process more transparent for taxpayers as well as the officials. The MCD would soon start sending notices to defaulters who failed to deposit property tax.
