The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) issued an expression of interest (EOI) on Tuesday for the establishment of a bio-CNG plant as an initiative to treat wet garbage generated across the city which is presently the most prominent issue for the corporation. The corporation is presently planning to set up the plant in its Gau Sadan premises at Shankarpur.

The Dehradun municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal said that the bio-CNG plant will be set up and operated on the concept of waste to wealth. He said that the high demand for bio-CNG based fuel and products in the market will help the MCD to get a consistent income which would be spent on development projects in the city. He said that the disposal of wet biodegradable waste that constitutes a big part of the garbage generated in the city can be easily disposed of through the bio-CNG plant.

The commissioner said that once the disposal of wet garbage starts in the plant, there would be a considerable decrease in the amount of garbage sent to the solid waste management and recycling plant in Sheeshambada for disposal. It will certainly improve the condition of the Sheeshambada plant along with the garbage transfer stations.

He said that the issue of the disposal of cow dung in open places can also be resolved with the operation of the plant. The corporation has made a plan for setting up a plant to process 50 tonnes of waste (cow dung and biodegradable garbage) at a time. He said that the corporation is aware of the issues caused by untreated cow dung and garbage across the city and this initiative will help in their proper disposal while producing energy and manure. He also informed that the corporation is in talks with various government and non-governmental agencies to set up the plant. The corporation is also considering operating it in the public-private partnership (PPP) mode but nothing has been finalised so far, added the commissioner.
