The sale of coconut water has increased manifold in the city due to the rise in the number of dengue cases. Many coconut water sellers claimed that people suffering from dengue are willing to pay higher prices for coconut water.  Before dengue hit the city, coconut water was sold at Rs 50 per unit. However, with the rise in dengue cases, the rate has increased to Rs 70 per unit in the city, said a coconut water seller.

A coconut water seller Dinesh Kumar said that the demand for coconut water has increased in the past few weeks due to the increase in cases of dengue. “There has been a surge in sales of coconut water at my stall. I have been selling at least 60 coconuts a day since the arrival of dengue in the city. With demand increasing, price of the coconut water has also increased. The price of coconut water is expected to rise more in the future.” Said Dinesh

Another coconut water seller Gautam Bora said that though coconut water always remains in demand, its sale has increased more due to the cases of dengue in the city. He said, that earlier he normally charged Rs 40-45 per coconut from the customers. However, now people don’t hesitate to pay higher prices due to the dengue cases in the city, he added.

Local resident Umesh Singh told this correspondent that with an increase in dengue cases, the coconut water sellers have increased the price. But there is no other option for him than to buy the coconut water at higher prices. The doctor advised him to consume the coconut water to recuperate soon, he added.
