Factors like unseasonal rains have affected the supply of mangoes, due to which the price of this popular fruit has increased by an average of Rs 20 as compared to last year in Dehradun.  Many fruit sellers point out that the unseasonal rain in the State during April and May caused damage to the local mango crop. The damaged produce has affected the supply of mangoes in the local market, said the senior inspector of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Ajay Dabral.

A fruit seller Asif said, “The price of mangoes has increased compared to the previous year. Last year I sold mangoes for up to Rs 80 per kilogramme whereas this time the price of mangoes is Rs 100 per kilogramme. The shortage of supply directly results in a rise in the prices of mangoes in the State.”

Another fruit seller Kaif Ali said that this time there is a shortage of every variety of mangoes in the State which affects the cost. The production of mangoes was better last year.  He said that there are various factors that affected the production of mangoes this time. Unseasonal rainfall and high temperatures are the two common factors behind the shortage of mangoes in the State, he said.

Commenting on the shortage of mangoes in the State market Dabral said, “Yes, this year the price of mangoes in the market is higher as compared to last year. Earlier the State markets were flooded with mangoes but the adverse climatic condition like the rains that occurred in May deferred the flowering of buds. Apart from this, the rise of temperature in May and June also had an adverse impact on the production of mangoes.”

He further said that the two common factors pre-monsoon showers and high temperature had affected the supply of mangoes in the market which ultimately resulted in its price rise. However, it is expected that the situation will be under control and the price of mangoes will fall in the near future, he opined.
