Several local businessmen protested at the Asharodi check post on Tuesday accusing the officials of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) department of harassing them. The secretary of Doon Udyog Vyapar Mandal (DUVM) Sunil Masson informed that the department is harassing the businessmen by taking unnecessary actions against the commercial vehicles entering the district with supplies.

“The department has imposed penalties on some commercial vehicles due to inadequate documents but the officials are not letting them go even after submitting the required amount,” stated Masson. He said that a driver of one of the commercial vehicles from Gujarat was penalised with Rs 1.31 lakh due to some missing documents. He said that when the penalty was paid, the officials told him to pay the penalty again as it was paid to the Central Government rather than to the state government here. He said, “There are several such cases which have become common in the recent months. We protested against such harassment in the department’s office near Asharodi on Tuesday.”

The association members said that if such harassment continues, they will be forced to stage a massive protest.
