Stating that lack of adequate parking arrangements, narrow roads and haphazard parking of vehicles on the roads are the main causes of severe traffic jams in Nainital city, the Nainital district magistrate Vandana Singh directed the departments concerned to expedite the ongoing work to improve the traffic condition ahead of tourist season. She also conducted an inspection of the ongoing construction works being carried out in the city as part of the measures to improve traffic-related arrangements in Nainital as per the high court order.

She said that a PIL is pending in the High Court regarding the poor traffic system in Nainital city and the administration has been directed to improve the situation. Several departments and agencies like the Nainital district level development authority, municipal body and Public Works Department (PWD) are carrying out works like widening parking stands and junctions besides marking no- parking zones across the city. The administration’s main focus is to strengthen the city’s parking system, which usually becomes a major concern during tourist season.

The DM said that improved condition of roads and parking system will surely benefit locals as well as tourists. She said that the transport department in coordination with police, civic bodies and district administration has already identified 17 places as no- parking zones ahead of peak tourist season to ensure roads and certain places are not congested during peak hours. The departments concerned have been directed to ensure effective enforcement and take strict action against offenders. The DM also inspected the work of widening intersections at Barapatthar and Rickshaw Stand in Mallital and instructed the PWD executive engineer to expedite the work. She also expressed disappointment over the delay in the line shifting work by Jal Sansthan and UPCL in the street near the Nainital bus stand. She directed all the departments concerned to complete the work before the commencement of the tourist season.
