MCH defers plan to make cow dung logs for cremation

The Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) has deferred its plan of making dried logs from cow dung for cremation as finding suitable buyers is turning out to be difficult for the officials. The city has been facing serious issues like waterlogging during monsoon besides potential health risks and environmental concerns like methane emission due to improper disposal of cow dung in large quantities by big dairies. In order to tackle the issue, the corporation had held a meeting in April with the team proposed to be involved in making of cow dung logs, dairy owners and representatives of the management of various Ghats of the city to establish coordination among all before starting the project.

The corporation had planned to start the production in May and make it available for consumers after a week expecting to earn monthly revenue of about Rs 10 lakh. This estimation was made by the officials considering that the public would commence the use of such logs instead of the wooden logs near the Ghats for cremation as they would be provided at cheaper rates than wood. However, the project is yet to take off from its initial stage even after four months as the corporation is still struggling to find buyers that can deliver the cow dung logs and other products. On being asked about the project, the municipal commissioner of Haridwar, Dayanand Saraswati told The Pioneer that MCH has not found a suitable buyer for the cow dung logs that can make it easily available for consumers while offering fair price to the corporation. “The project has been deferred considering such issues but we are working on the matter to pick up this project as soon as possible,” added Saraswati.
