The Doon University has recently established a cutting-edge science laboratory on its premises to facilitate groundbreaking research. Stating this information, head of the geology department at the university Vipin Kumar stated that this new facility operated by the department of geology and geography will offer unparalleled resources for researchers and students to conduct innovative research in the Himalayan region. The main objective of establishing the lab is to streamline research processes similar to those experienced in Joshimath subsidence case. He added that this lab will eliminate the need for the State government to seek external laboratories for research, as research on any causes of calamities will be conducted within the university lab. Kumar further highlighted that the lab covers state-of-the-art facilities with 40 high-end computers equipped with GIS and remote sensing software. Additionally, the facility is equipped with sophisticated geological instruments such as lidar drones, ground penetrating radar, advanced microscopes, weather stations, total stations, electrical resistivity tomography Instruments and water isotope analyser, he said. He further informed that this investment of the lab in advanced technology would enable researchers to explore crucial fields like disaster prevention, groundwater exploration, climate change analysis and sustainable development planning for the Himalayan and other Indian terrains. He highlighted the successful funding of the laboratory through a proposal submitted by him and Vijit Sahay, head of the geography department in August 2023, which received approval in November 2023. The establishment of this facility was made feasible by a grant of Rs five crore from the Central government, he said.

The university vice chancellor Surekha Dangwal inaugurated the laboratory last week. During the inauguration, Dangwal highlighted the laboratory’s significant role as a national leader in Himalayan research within India. This initiative highlights Doon University’s strong dedication to utilising advanced technology to enhance its educational and research capacities, promoting creative solutions in different fields.
