Jairam Ramesh expresses concern on Joshimath situation

The central leadership of Congress party would take up the issue of the land subsidence in Joshimath with the central government. Former union minister Jairam Ramesh assured the State president of Rajiv Gandhi Panchayat Raj Sanghatan, Mohit Uniyal that pressure would be exerted on the Uttarakhand government for the safety of local people. Uniyal who is one of the Yatris in the ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that Ramesh termed the hydro power projects in the sensitive mountains as danger for the safety of the local people. In his meeting with the senior leader of Congress party, Uniyal expressed concern at the safety of thousands of families of Joshimath due to land subsidence. He appealed that the Congress party should raise the issue of safety and relocation of affected families of Joshimath at the national level.  He said that the major hydropower projects are posing a threat to the mountains of Uttarakhand. After the meeting Ramesh posted some pictures of Joshinath on his twitter handle and said “For 26 months when I was the environment minister I grappled with the development- environment issue in Uttarakhand. In the vast majority of cases I decided in favour of ecological protection. It didn’t win me friends, but these visuals from Joshimath vindicates my position.’’
