Implement single-use plastic ban effectively-Garbyal

The Nainital district magistrate Dhiraaj Garbyal directed officials to make their offices plastic-free and ensure that campaigns are undertaken to make the people aware of the ban in the State on single-use plastic. He said this while chairing a meeting to discuss measures to ensure the effective implementation of the ban on single-use plastics. He also directed the officials to make the people in rural areas award of the damage caused by single-use plastic. He said that in case of plastic producing industrial enterprises in the district, these should be registered with the Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board. Necessary action will be initiated against such enterprises if they do not register, he said. The DM also directed executive officers of the municipal bodies concerned and sub divisional magistrates to ensure that checking campaigns are conducted consistently in their respective areas. The Tehsildar, sub-inspector, municipality executive officer and block development officer have been instructed to ensure strict action against traders who place single-use plastic items in their shops. Garbyal also directed the DPRO and block development officers to conduct inspections and check if the villagers are properly disposing solid and liquid waste while also directing the Gram Pradhans and ward members to provide a report on the same. The commissioners of municipal corporations were directed to write letters to Mandi secretaries for ensuring that all commercial vehicles in these wholesale agricultural markets are also checked.Inspections should also be conducted in the weekly Haats to check for single-use plastic, he further said.

The Industries general manager was directed to write to industrial enterprises to ensure that the ban on plastic used by industries on packaging is implemented properly. Further, the municipality executive officers were directed to ensure that dealers who sell products from multinational companies are not packed in plastic any more. He directed the Nainital municipality executive officer to form a committee along with ward members to monitor cleaning in the Naini lake area.
