Human-wildlife conflict-Rs 2 cr corpus created for immediate compensation: Minister

The Forest minister Subodh Uniyal has said that the State government has created a corpus of Rs two crore to provide immediate compensation to the victims of human-wildlife conflict.

 Responding to a question raised by Congress MLA Sumit Hridayesh during question hour on the second day of the budget session of the Assembly on Tuesday, the Forest minister said that a total of 444 persons in the State have lost their lives since 2017 till date in the attacks by wild animals. He said that the department has disbursed a sum of Rs 21.38 crore as compensation in deaths and injuries resulting from human-wildlife conflict from the year 2017-18 till December 2023.

In response to a question by BJP MLA Brijbhushan Gairola the minister said that the Secure Himalaya project is being executed in Uttarkashi for conservation of the snow leopard. He added that a snow leopard conservation centre will come up at Bhairav Ghati in Uttarkashi and for it a sum of Rs 1.23 crore has been approved for construction of Forest department facilities. Similarly, Rs 4.87 crore has been approved for construction of its building and Devdar Cafe, the snow leopard conservation centre.
