HC stays sale of liquor in tetra packs, citing harm to environment

In a setback to the State government vis a vis its new excise policy, the Uttarakhand High Court has stayed the sale of liquor in tetra packs till further order. It sought response from the State government on this matter by April 21. The court asks the State government to inform how much plastic the sale of liquor in tetra packs would generate and whether it will adversely affect the environment. The division bench of the Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Alok Kumar Verma said that the next hearing of the case would be held on April 21.

The public interest litigation filed by Naresh Chandra of Champawat was heard in the division bench. The PIL said that the new excise policy of the state government that allows 200 ml liquor in tetra packs will harm environment and sought ban on the proposed sale of 200 ml liquor in tetra pack. In the PIL, Naresh Chandra further said that the new excise policy of the State government stands against its policy of stopping plastic generation.
