HC dismisses petitions claiming EVM tampering

The Uttarakhand High Court has dismissed five petitions regarding alleged tampering with EVMs in the 2017 Vidhan Sabha election on the grounds that the petitions were not verified. Earlier, while hearing the matter on October 14, the court had reserved its judgement in these petitions. The decision was revealed during hearing by the single bench of justice Lokpal Singh on Tuesday.

According to the case details, defeated candidates of the Congress- Navprabhat, Vikram Singh, Rajkumar, Ambrish Kumar and Godavari Thapli had filed election petitions in the high court challenging the election of BJP candidates Munna Singh Chauhan, Khajan Das, Adesh Kumar Chauhan and Ganesh Joshi. The petitioners had accused the election commission and the government of facilitating the victory of the candidates by tampering with the EVMs. On the basis of this allegation, the petitioners had sought cancellation of their election. The victorious candidates had stated that the petitions were baseless. They pointed out that the petitioners had not provided any evidence of the EVMs being tampered with. Considering this, the election petitions should be dismissed, the MLAs had contended.

Bhagat said that the Congress is habituated to wasting the time of the court and public using falsehoods. Stating that the HC dismissing petitions of the Congress candidates alleging EVM tampering was akin to a tight slap to the Congress, he said that the public is supporting the BJP which the Congress is unable to digest.
